KAYLA ARRIVED AT the suite just as Greg was leaving.

“How was the Sargenti party?” Renee asked.

“So much fun.” Kayla held up a bag. “I got you some swag.”

“Why, thank you.” They sat side by side on the sofa, going through the items in the silver gift bag.

“Oh, before I forget... Lucy said some guy named Kevin keeps calling the boutique for you. He says you two are friends, and he wants to connect with you while you’re here in New York.”

Renee couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “He called the boutique?”

“Yes. Do you know him?” Kayla inquired. “He left a phone number.”

“Oh, I have his number—I just don’t intend to use it.”

“Ookaay...”

“Kevin is my ex-fiancé. We broke up, and he ended up marrying someone else.” She and Kayla hadn’t started working together until after that time, so she hadn’t known about him. “I have no idea why he suddenly wants to talk to me now. Back then, he didn’t think I was a good match for him and his political aspirations.”

Kayla sat back, looking surprised. “Maybe he’s no longer married or has a political career.”

“Doesn’t matter to me.” Renee shrugged. “We’re not good together. I had to learn that the hard way.”

Kayla nodded. “What happens if you run into him this week? If he’s trying to reconnect with you, he might show up somewhere.”

“I’ll simply say hello and keep it moving,” Renee responded with a tight smile. She prayed Kevin would have the good sense to stay away from her. “Please make sure he’s not on our list for the fashion show or the reception. I’d like my events to be drama free.”

Kayla picked up her iPad. “Let me check the list right now.”

“Thanks.”

Renee made some tea to help ease the tension she was feeling. She couldn’t understand why Kevin was being so persistent. He’d never had any interest in her personal goals. In fact, he’d tried to persuade her to give up the dream of being a fashion designer. He had never been supportive.

“The only Kevin on our list is Kevin Reynolds, and he’s a singer.”

Renee released a short sigh of relief. “Good.”

“You know, he may be coming around now because you’re the new face in the world of fashion design.”

That was true—people like Kevin were always trying to use others. “Whatever the reason, I’m not interested in seeing or talking to him again.” She was glad to have Greg with her. She knew if Kevin tried anything, she’d be protected. Her father and brother weren’t too thrilled with him, either. They didn’t like the way he’d ended their engagement. She hoped Kevin would give up and just let her be.
